My worst experiment was when I was trying to label some cells and I accidentally put salt water on the cells instead of the solution they like to be kept in. This made all the cells burst and turn is a snotty-looking slime. Experiment over 🙁

Yeh whe I first started out as a scientist I done a similar thing to Michelle, I was using the wrong liquid for an experiment which is meant to separate out lots of proteins and the liquid I used had some acid in it so it broke the machine, the liquid all frothed over the sides and the proteins were ruined. Everyone makes these sorts of mistakes though so you don’t get in trouble, as long as you don’t do it again.

My worst experiment was when i dropped all my cells in the floor at the very end of an experiment that was a week long. I tried to rescue them from the floor but they were dead 🙁 Once i’d done that once i was extra careful not to do it again!

When I first started my PhD I designed a ridiculous and unneccessary experiment where I had to check some results every 4 hours for 5 days, which meant I couldn’t go home and sleep, and had to sleep in an office for a couple of hours at a time. After I finished, I found out there was a machine that could have done it all for me. I felt a bit of an idiot.

My worst experiment is called a “nocodazole experiment”. I treat my cells with nocodazole and then had to come in and collect samples every 4 hours for 24 hours. And no matter which way I tried to arrange the timings I would have to come in at a ridiculous time, like at 1am and then 5am. Unfortunately I don’t have a machine that will do that for me so I am still putting off doing this experiment again!
