  I’m not sure exactly what they are doing so it’s difficult to say. The thing with science is that even the tiniest difference in idea can be the difference between an idea working and it not working. There are loads of scientists working on lots of similar fields and this is a great thing, because scientists share ideas all the time. None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes, so if someone else is doing a similar thing as you, then maybe they will spot what you did wrong, or think of a way to make it better.
