I became a cell scientist because it sort of just happened. I was always more interested in mammal cells than in bacteria or yeast cells and I always liked studying medicine. As medicines work by acting on the cells (usually) I looked for jobs in that sort of area. My first job was in pharmaceutical research trying to make new drugs, such as a female version of viagra. Then I applied for a PhD was in Cancer research so I was now firmly becoming a cell scientist. And now I’m looking at nerve cells so I suppose I’m sort of a neuroscientist, but I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I started.
